My parents bought Chief for me in dec 1993, after we found out Donnie could no longer compete. He was an exracehorse who had not made the grade. when I went to look at him he was a gangly 3year old, but I could see the potential in him, so Cheify came home too.
As he was a baby, I needed to take things very slowly with him, so he went on holiday to give him time to mature, and mature he did especially in size. So When Chiefy was four and a half years old I started working him, I could see that I had my hands very full with him, and it was not going to be easy! Well after many months and an occasional fight with him, he finally came around to my way......(hehe)
So it was time for his first competition, and Chiefy was at his best. What could go wrong???
Well I took him slowly around the first class just to get him accustomed to the surroundings and atmosphere, he went like a dream. So I decided to try him in the second class as there was more for him too look at, well he was going well then as we were coming up to a jump, I felt him tense, then "bang" he leapt this jump about 3 feet higher than what it was, then on landing out of high spirits he bucked, and well, I went flying through the air over the top of his head doing a somersault then landed "wham" straight on the floor, then Cheify nice and relaxed walked over to me and looked at me as if to say "what you doing down there"! So it was back to basics again...........lol
Well I worked Chiefy through the winter, preparing him for the summer season and he was proving to be an exceptional and talented showjumper.
Although then I fell pregnant and knew that I would not have the time or money to fulfil his potential, which in my mind, he was capable of taking himself and his rider to the top!
So after a hard and long think, I came to a descion which was not easy to make; Chiefy was to be sold. Well we had a lot of interest and finally a young girl seemed to be perfect for him, so after trying him many times and falling in love with him, she took Cheify home. They are very well suited and they are both getting on really well together.
